The Department of Applied English is home to the degree programs that accommodate the demand of the new century for interdisciplinary talents. It was established in 2000 upon the merging of the former Shandong University of Science and Technology and Shandong University. It embraces an integrative approach to cultivating multidisciplinary talents, taking advantage of the unique range and variety of offerings that the University provides in related disciplines.
The Department offers three undergraduate degree programs: four-year Business English, five-year double-degree in English and Law, and five-year double-degree in English and International Politics.
The Business English program traces its history back to the Department of Foreign Languages, which was founded in 1997 at the former Shandong University of Science and Technology. Guided by a model of “language + academic knowledge,” students are expected to develop their proficiency in English through intensive language courses and develop an expertise in business through multilateral trading practice. Students enrolled in this program develop inter-disciplinary talents, applicable skills, and a global mindset to meet the needs of various governmental departments, international organizations, and enterprises.
The double-degree in English and Law program, established in 2000 in cooperation with the Law School, is a five-year joint-major program aiming at a deep integration of language and legal knowledge. Students in this program are expected to acquire not only skills in English but also expertise in law, enabling them to adapt more swiftly to the international environment and serve in international legal affairs.
The double-degree in English and International Politics program was created with the School of Politics and Public Administration in 2001 as a five-year joint-major program. Beyond the scope of language, students are expected to gain knowledge in politics, sociology, and other disciplines in the social sciences, the mastery of which will enhance students’ skills in almost every domain, such as gathering and synthesizing information, applying logical problem-solving skills, and identifying and analyzing problems that emerge in the international arena.
Apart from the above undergraduate programs, the Department of Applied English also offers graduate programs in general linguistics and applied linguistics. The faculty of the department come from multiple backgrounds and represent a wide range of interests, offering courses and conducting research in formal linguistics, functional linguistics, cognitive linguistics, neurolinguistics, psycholinguistics, discourse analysis, second language writing, EFL pedagogy, minority languages, among others. The department shares a commitment to interdisciplinary research and respect for differences and diversity.
